Two Tongues - Two Tongues

7/10

This is definitely one of the more interesting ideas in pop-punk, and I was happy to give it a listen. For those of you who are unaware, Two Tongues is the love child of Chris Conley from Saves The Day, and Max Bemis from Say Anything. The two front men decided to bring their worlds together, and ever so appropriately named it Two Tongues.

The album opener "Crawl" I think is one of the better songs on the record, and certainly a perfect track to open the album. I think what surprised me about this album is that I wasn't surprised at all. All the songs sound like Say Anything and Saves The Day. The second track "If I Could Make You Do Things" is a pretty clever song with some dialogue lyrics, which I felt was a cool touch. These first two songs I honestly consider the best part of the album.

Next we get to "Dead Lizard", interesting enough, short verses, really catchy chorus and some pretty solid guitar tones. Sometimes I think I just don't understand pop-punk much anymore, some of the more praised tracks on the album such as "Wowee Zowee" and "Come On" which others would consider highlights, I sort of thought of as the flaws.

The album is interesting but it eventually falls into the same format and unoriginality as a lot of similar albums in this genre would. You can certainly tell what parts of the album were ideas from Conley and what were from Bemis. The album starts strong, and it seems as if the ideas were flowing for awhile and they structured the album in order with when the songs were written as it progressively gets less interesting.

Again I should mention that this isn't a shot at either of the two artists or the band. This is an attempt to give a review from a point of view outside that of a fan. I like the concept of the collaboration, and some of the ideas and the songs are really bursting with uniqueness, but some aren't even in the slightest. The overall feel of the album to me is that they rushed to get it written, as opposed to letting their ideas flow naturally, which is why it is lacking.
